in an interview with her,
Growing up in Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene (F.G.C, IK) was one of the best things that happened to my music career. Singing and leading in the children’s choir was a great achievement then at F.G.C, IK’s protestant chapel. The children’s choir gave me a good leverage and with the excellence of the student’s choir, there was no option for shabby ministrations/performances. It was very important to do well at each turn out, because, there was daddy’s big handshake, each time, when he said, “Oby, VERY GOOD”.
F.G.C., IK protestant chapel choir laid a stronger foundation for me. It was much more interesting when I wrote my first song “it is not easy”, which I sang with the choir, as the choir mistress. The outcome of the song and the response of people towards it was enough encouragement that led me to writing more songs and aspiring to get into the music industry.

While studying mass communication in the University if Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), i was also a member of a choir and praise team at Christ Church Chapel, UNN. There, I served as the assistant music director and then, invariably the music director. This was another very memorable period in my career.

I have always worked at pursuing my music career on a larger scale than just singing in church. I’ve always believed I could perform like the other musicians I listened to. I even learnt to sing their songs like them, with their own voices and voice textures. I always didn’t stop at trying until I sang on every key and pitch they did. I grew up, as a kid, listening to Don Moen, Women of Faith, Hilsong music, Paul Wilbur, Kirk Franklin and Panam Pacy Paul. Subsequently, Cece Winans, Juanita Bynum, Jaci Velasquez, BarlowGirl, Francesca Battistelli, Avalon, Asa, amongst others. I love musicians with great voices and lyrics that are impactful.

Favorite artistes: Francesca Battistelli, BarlowGirl, Dare Art Alade, Asa, Jaci Velasquez, Juanita Bynum, Avalon, Casting Crowns, Darlene Zschech, Frank Edwards, The Katinas, CeCe Winans.
